Don't Take The Bait
Don't Take The Bait
By: Danny Wallace
When our pride is wounded and our reputations are challenged, the enemy attempts to increase our arrogance, while God seizes the opportunity to humble our hearts. Lucifer walks in the mud of slander, while Jesus smiles from the high road of silence.
Everyday of our lives this war is raging around us. Although this is a bigger problem for some than others, it affects us all. The enemy of our destiny will do anything he can to draw us into his slimy world of retribution, anger, and self-justification. In the flesh it feels like the right response. After all, if we don’t stand up for “Number One,” who will?
When the temptation comes to defend ourselves, or to retaliate against vicious gossip, Jesus has shown us the way. While falsely accused and viciously slandered, Jesus stood silent. Equipped with words eloquent enough to create the world, our Lord didn’t speak a single word in His own defense. He set this example for our good, and for His eternal glory.
A trap is set for each of us today. Positioned ever so delicately in mid-air is a brilliant piece of the finest cheese. The enemy whispers, “Take it.” He orchestrates a cloud of confusion around us to wound our pride and challenge our reputation. He points to the cheese and whispers again, “Are you going to stand still for that? What kind of person are you anyway? COME – take the bait, take me to task!”
It would be so easy, and it would also be momentarily gratifying. However, just as we consider taking a step for the bait the tender voice of the Lord speaks and says…
“You who sit down in God’s sweet presence, and spend the night in Shaddai’s shadow, say this: ‘God, you are my refuge. I trust in You and I am safe.’ That’s right – He rescues you from hidden traps, shields you from deadly hazards. His huge outstretched arms protect you – under them you are perfectly safe; His arms fend off all harm. Fear nothing – not wild wolves in the night, not flying arrows in the day, not disease that prowls through the darkness, not disaster that erupts at high noon. Even though others succumb all around, drop like flies right and left, no harm will even graze you. You’ll stand untouched, watch it all from a distance. Watch the wicked turn into corpses. Yes, because God is your refuge, the High God your very own home, ‘Evil’ can’t get close to you, and harm can’t get through the door.”
“He ordered his angels to guard you wherever you go. If you stumble, they’ll catch you; their job is to keep you from falling. You’ll walk unharmed among lions and snakes, and kick young lions and serpents from the path.”
Be still, and be silent. God is working. Don’t – take – the – bait.”
