I love the simplicity of Jesus. Ask Him a question and He cuts to the chase. When asked in Matthew, Chapter 20 which of the commandments was the greatest, Jesus said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Everything that is good and right is a by-product of love. This is the formula for a joyful life, just in case you’re looking for one. There is no sidestepping the foundation of love. If we love God, it is automatic that we will love others. However, if we are trying to love God so that “hopefully,” He will love us…well, that is a foundation of shifting sand upon which nothing will grow.
We love God because HE first loved us. If we don’t understand that then all of our best laid plans and proclamations will be wasted. We can deceive ourselves into believing we can respect a person without loving them, but that is an impossible feat. Respect is a by-product of love. Have you heard it said, “I like him, but I don’t love him?” Impossible. Love comes first, and everything that is good follows love.
This is an effort to reduce the great gift of love to degrees. To say that we “like” but do not love someone is to sneak up on a love that Jesus said would flow freely from our love for God. Build your life on a solid foundation today. Build something that will never fail.
Build on the great gift of love. Love first, and everything else is healed, restored, transformed, and set in right relationship with God and others.
