There was a line from a 1970’s movie that caused much religious controversy. Ali McGraw spoke the line to Ryan O’Neal in the film, “Love Story.” She said, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
The Ambassadors of Religion immediately pounced on the line as being contrary to repentance. However, upon closer examination, we realize the line is correct, and completely in line with the gift of Grace. We “can” say I’m sorry – we probably “should” say I’m sorry, but LOVE doesn’t require it. Therefore, love means never “having” to say, “I’m sorry.”
Love seeks no explanation –
When evil speaks, it feels like a dull, and jagged knife, slashing away our confidence with words of judgment and condemnation. When evil has finished with us, we often feel compelled to explain ourselves. We feel guilty and misunderstood. That is not the case. Evil understands us perfectly. In fact, it hopes and waits for our explanation, for “in the explanation,” it uncovers, even more, to criticize and slice to pieces with its dull and evil tongue. Hatred will never relinquish its agenda of destruction.
When love speaks, it soothes the heart with words of blessing, affirmation, encouragement, and forgiveness. It is a soothing balm that brings healing to our weary soul. Even when we are wrong, love comes in wisdom – the same wisdom the adulterous woman encountered the day Jesus held her heart in His healing hands.
Lucifer distracts God’s anointed from their true inheritance of Grace by the accusation of Law. He rushes in from every possible angle with words of hatred, slander, and false accusations. He calls us sinners, rebellious, and displeasing to God, knowing that we will only strive harder to keep what Jesus fulfilled. Lucifer even mixes in a little truth, the same as evil men spoke to shame the adulterous woman. He believes that if he shouts loud and long enough, the anointed of God will retreat to hide in fear under a tree, the same as Ahab hid from Jezebel’s evil threats.
Stand firm in the Lord. Speak forth words of blessing, love, and forgiveness. Let evil men talk. Only evil has the authority to take the floor on behalf of its agenda. Nevertheless, evil is destined to fail in the presence of love. Evil always overplays its hand, revealing its real agenda.
Children of Grace lift Jesus high and glorious! How else will every hurting heart see Him, and rush into His arms? It is our honor, our passion, and the joy of our life. Love means never “having” to say, “I’m sorry.”
