The Fog Is Lifting
By: Danny Wallace
Almost every person I meet is seeking for the same thing. They want to know that God loves and accepts them, although everything they have heard suggests “He almost does,” but not quite yet. When it comes to the authorities of religion conveying hope and acceptance, it is somewhat like the blind leading the blind. It is the sense of “heading somewhere,” but not quite sure where you're. There are a heaviness and weariness that is unspoken, but yet so real.
I see it in the eyes of children whose parents berate them in public and talk to them through clenched teeth and glaring eyes. You see the small child wilt and withdraw as the parent’s angry voice escalates with no regard for the public humiliation their words bring to this child who is “trapped” in their care. I witness it almost every day in Atlanta, Georgia, where I live. It pains me to my core to see the look in the eyes of these children. I felt that same pain as a child on many occasions.
It is the feeling of unacceptability. We withdraw within ourselves for protection against words of aggression and wonder what is wrong with us that a person sent to love and protect us does not approve of us whatsoever. It is the same look I see in the eyes of those who haven’t missed a church service in 20 years for fear of displeasing God and waking up tomorrow to discover that God’s disapproval has sentenced them to an eternity in Hell. What would religion do without its Hell?
The old life is gone; a new life blossoms! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between Himself and all mankind and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with Himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by forgiving all sin. God has given us the task of telling everyone what He has done.
The emptiness we see in our brother’s eyes is there because we have done anything “but” what God asked of us. We do not believe ALL sin is forgiven. We do not believe that God is reconciled with the entire world forevermore. We do not believe that God put the world square with Himself through the sacrifice of Jesus. Therefore, we preach a message of hopelessness and fear – Hell and judgment. No wonder the world is in chaos. We haven’t lifted a finger to reconcile ourselves with anyone, when “reconcile with others” is all we were asked to do. In fact, we spit in the face of those who defy or disagree with us. All we’ve done is spend generations beating people to death with our faux, gospel lie of . We may credit this misplaced message for the state of chaos we witness around the world today.
Not to fear - times are changing. 2017 will be a year of GREAT surprises! The fog is lifting as we behold the authentic face of Jesus Christ. The souls of men will vomit the stagnated message of what God supposedly left unfinished, and man is burdened to complete. In its place is a message of reconciliation and transformation. Yes, the fog is lifting and the sky is Heaven blue.
